Night 13

I was intrigued last year to see that Nightwish’s Tuomas Holopainen was working on a side project named Auri (after a recurring character in Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles books, a series that has already informed Tuomas’s writing for Nightwish). Tuomas is one third of the Auri line-up, the other members being Tuomas’s wife, vocalist Johanna Kurkela, and his Nightwish compatriot, British multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley. Given that line-up, and Troy’s famed prowess on a number of traditional acoustic instruments, I was hoping for something quite far removed from Nightwish’s flamboyant gothic metal (for all that I love the band), and it looks like I’m not going to be disappointed. Check out this first taste of the material from the band’s eponymous debut album, which is due for release on March 23rd.

I’m properly excited about this, and not just because I love Nightwish and Rothfuss’s books. I really enjoy Tuomas’s writing, and this already feels both pleasingly different to Nightwish and intriguing in its own right. There’s talk of live shows, too. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull that off and who they get to join them on stage. Yeah, interesting stuff. 🙂
